"Timothy's work diagrams the perception of perception and rests within the marvelous, with its head in the clouds and its feet on the ground, taking us on an adventure which breaks abstract codes to unleash the truth behind the inexplicable."  - Gypsy Spirit Mission

Timothy B Layden's work investigates various aspects of human life, exploring diverse perspectives and states within the shared spectrum of experience. He investigates the construction of reality through the senses and the emotional development of human observation, interaction and understanding, conceptualising this through abstraction, symbolism and the interpretation of myth.

Originally from Seattle Washington in the USA, Timothy B Layden has been an artist, student, designer, teacher and an activist in The USA, Mexico, Italy, Japan, Spain and The UK. He studied a BA in Fine Arts at the University of The Americas in Mexico, where he co-formed his first collective, EXPOSIóN, with an international group of young painters and taught art at a local secondary school involving youth in cooperative art projects. From 1995 to 97, he produced mixed media art work and ran workshops from his live-in studio in Seattle.  In 1997, he worked with marginalized youth, graffiti artists and fine artists to develop murals for the Sodo urban arts corridor. In '98 and '99 he lived in Japan , where he formed part of the art collective Club Ikebukero. From 1998 to 2000 he travelled from Japan to Mexico and back to the US working with different groups of artists, producing new work and exhibiting. In 2000 he arrived in Spain where he began his studies at the University of Barcelona focusing his research on interdisciplinary studies between the arts relating this to history, philosophy and science, finally writing his doctoral thesis on the influence of music and synesthesia on contemporary painting. At the same time he developed a series of exhibitions of mixed media visual art while working with a street theatre group doing performances in public spaces in Madrid. Since receiving his PhD in Fine Art from the University of Barcelona in 2005 he has come to settled in London where he lives with his wife produces artwork and has collaborated on a number of creative projects within the UK as well as abroad: he has been involved with the urban art intervention group City Mine(d) (www.citymined.org) in London, Brussels and Barcelona; developed research and interactive workshops on art and Synestheasia; exhibited new work individually and collectively in The UK and abroad; developed abstract animation videos and designs for the musical group The Beautiful taste (www.thebeautifultaste.com); has been teaching art theory and practice and working with the Arte-Cittá foundation (www.artecitta.es) developing interdisciplinary projects and research related to synesthesia.

Layden TB, still unseen

Timothy B Layden is interested in the complex systems withholding human experience, and exploring multiple layers of sensuality through turbulent rhythms of colour and figurative symbolism.  He is  inspired in how reality is constructed by multiple dimensions of perception, and senses meld conceptually and synesthetically with one another to make up different world views. Using form and colour to represent rhythms of emotional and sensual experience, he explores human interaction and discovery.  His work looks at how waves of consciousness interfere with one another. The figures, whether centre stage or lost amongst the mêlée of colours, are props for the sensuality of sentiment emitted through the friction of relationships, and the sensual and emotional exchanges of human consciousness. It attempts to bridge the fear and confusion of identity with mysteries of the unknown. it is  the result of concrete experience, while, at the same time, abstract interpretations of the expanse of human imagination.
